Help make aortic research clearer for patients

The European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) has approached Aortic Dissection Awareness UK & Ireland, The Patient Charity, because it values the experience and insight of our members. It is looking for people with personal experience of an aortic or other blood vessel condition to review a draft report and help researchers understand the questions and concerns that matter to patients and families.

The report looks at physician modified endografts: aortic stent grafts adapted by a specialist for an individual patient when a ready made device may not be suitable. ESVS is reviewing what is known about their use, benefits and risks, and where further research is needed.

Patient contributors will read a draft report of around 10,000 words and send written comments using a form. You might point out an explanation that is hard to follow, a question patients would want answered, or an outcome that matters to families. You do not need medical or research training, and you will not be asked to give medical advice or make scientific decisions.

The review is expected to take 3–5 hours over a 10-day period in October or November 2026. Most contact will be by email, although there may be an online meeting or phone call. ESVS normally pays patient contributors €50 for each agreed hour for this pilot programme. You can also choose to donate or decline the payment.

Taking part is entirely your choice, and you can stop at any time. Contributors will be asked to keep unpublished drafts and discussions private.
