Charity launches new Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm patient leaflet

Posted on 28th June 2025

Helping patients and families understand a life-altering diagnosis, in partnership with expert cardiologists. Aortic Dissection Awareness UK & Ireland launched its new 'Understanding Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm' patient information leaflet - endorsed by the British Cardiovascular Society - in June 2025, as part of efforts to empower patients and prevent life-threatening aortic dissections.

The leaflet is now available as a free PDF download here.

Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) is a serious and often silent condition that affects thousands of people across the UK and Ireland. Left undetected or untreated, it can lead to aortic dissection or rupture - both life-threatening emergencies. For patients and their families, the diagnosis often comes as a shock, accompanied by confusion and fear.

The new patient leaflet addresses this knowledge gap head-on.

Written in plain language and co-developed by patients and expert cardiologists, Understanding Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm explains:

  • What the thoracic aorta is and how an aneurysm develops
  • Common symptoms, causes, and risk factors
  • What to expect from monitoring and treatment
  • Exercise advice for patients with thoracic aortic aneurysm
  • The importance of genetic screening in some cases
  • Questions to ask your doctor and where to find support

“We believe that patients deserve clear, compassionate information from the moment they’re diagnosed,” said Gareth Owens, Founding Chair of Aortic Dissection Awareness UK & Ireland. “This leaflet is a vital tool in helping people understand their condition, make informed decisions, and feel less alone.”

Endorsed by the British Cardiovascular Society following expert review, the leaflet also serves as a valuable resource for cardiologists and other clinicians who manage patients with Thoracic Aortic Disease. It can be shared with patients and family members in clinics, used as a conversation starter, or provided digitally via patient portals.

The author of the leaflet, Dr. Dalia Ahmed, Consultant Cardiologist and Lead for the Aortopathy service at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "My cardiology colleagues have responded very positively to the leaflet, particularly how effectively it communicates key information in a clear and approachable way. Several felt it sets a strong standard for locally developed patient resources, and they especially welcomed the British Cardiovascular Society endorsement, which adds credibility and will really help with wider adoption."

Then new leaflet complements the national patient charity's broader mission to raise awareness, improve diagnosis, and support all those affected by aortic disease, including through the THINK AORTA public awareness campaign and peer-led patient networks.
